WA's unemployment crisis

Thursday 10 Dec 2015

The latest unemployment figures are in - there are now 95,700 unemployed Western Australians- the highest number in history (since records started in 1978).

· WA's unemployment rate rose from 6.4% to 6.6%

· The national unemployment rate dropped from 5.9% to 5.8%

· WA has the same unemployment rate as Tasmania. Only South Australia is higher at 7.3% (which dropped from 7.6%)

When the Barnett Government came to office in October 2008 it was 28,700 - this is an increase of 67,000 people on Colin Barnett's watch. The Liberals' legacy is record debt and record unemployment, while the rest of the country is going ahead, Western Australia is going backwards.

The Liberals have wasted the boom, failed to save for the down turn and now everyday Western Australians are paying the price.

The Liberals cuts in our schools, in TAFEs and increased training fees only make unemployment worse.

Mark McGowan and WA Labor have a plan to grow jobs by creating a more diverse WA economy.
