Public housing stock drops as 40,000 Western Australians wait for housing

Friday 27 Nov 2015 Despite huge waitlists, WA's public housing stock is declining and more than 1,000 Department of Housing homes are sitting vacant and unused.

New figures tabled in Parliament have revealed that the Department of Housing currently holds 36,602 properties, down from 36,715 in 2014.

At the same time, the number of Department of Housing properties sitting vacant and unused has increased from 974 in 2013 to 1,011 in 2015.

There are currently more than 39,000 people on the Department of Housing's waitlist, who wait an average of three years to find a home.
