MIRRABOOKA policeman Sgt Don Emmanuel-Smith has been recognised as WA's top cop for 2011 after receiving the Police Officer of the Year award.
The community diversity officer was honoured in a ceremony at the Burswood Entertainment Complex for his work towards the culturally diverse community in Perth’s northern suburbs.
Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan said Sgt Emmanuel-Smith had carried out “significant work” in establishing relationships with community members representing Sudanese, African, Burmese and Islamic communities in the multicultural Mirrabooka area.
“His daily work has enabled a joint understanding of key community and policing issues which are often complex and sensitive in nature," he said.
"He is often called upon by the community and other representatives to use his cultural understanding to facilitate meetings and responses to sensitive policing and community issues."
