Light Rail high on agenda for locals

Wednesday 08 Jun 2011

"First responses and analysis reveal some clear trends for transport needs in the northern suburbs," Janine Freeman MLA said.

"Residents are very concerned by road congestion and the time taken to travel around the local road network."

"A light rail link will get northern suburbs residents out of their cars and onto sustainable transport and accessing the high frequency rail network between Perth and Joondalup," she said.

Mirrabooka activity centre is identified as a crucial transport and activity hub in the recently published Directions 2031 planning study.  Yet the Mirrabooka area is said by residents to be poorly served by public transport.

"Clearly there is a need to plan and build for the future transport needs of the northern suburbs.  Currently the majority of respondents use private vehicles as their prime means of transport.  The survey tells us they would drive their cars less if light rail were linked to the passenger rail network."

Integrating Mirrabooka into the public transport network with strong east-west linkages will provide a good alternate means of accessing work opportunities from Midland, Malaga, Balcatta and Osborne Park.

"A logical link would be light rail from Mirrabooka Bus Station to Warwick Station or the much needed Alexander Drive rapid transit system."

Janine Freeman has distributed a survey on transport issues for residents in the Nollamara electorate: Nollamara, Westminster, Mirrabooka, Koondoola and Alexander Heights. It can be found on-line at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VFDBDDN
