The new tax will impact most on low and middle-income families and pensioners, deterring people from seeking medical care - with potentially serious consequences.
WA President of the Australian Medical Association, Richard Choong, has said these changes are a threat to universal healthcare,
"They will either delay seeking medical attention or avoid taking their medications because they will also cost more or both."
- The West Australian, 5 May 2014
WA Labor leader Mark McGowan has spoken out against the proposal, saying
"Colin Barnett and the Liberals seem determined to attack Medicare and undermine Australia's internationally regarded universal health care system. WA Labor believes that all Australians should get the healthcare they need, not the healthcare they can afford.
The Premier doesn't seem to understand pressures facing families today."
