Barnett targets Homeswest tenants with cruel rate hikes

Monday 21 Mar 2011

The Barnett Government has increased the Homeswest rent for people receiving aged, disability, carer, veterans, war widows and widows’ pensions, despite other states around the country continuing with a rent freeze.from Homeswest rental calculations for a year, which expired on March 20.

From now on, one quarter of the pension increase will be taken away from pensioners by the Barnett Government, leaving pensioners to find an extra $416 a year for their Homeswest rent.

The Federal Labor Government increased pensions a year ago as a one off boost to help needy people cope with the increasing cost of living. This additional pension was excluded.

This Homeswest rental increase is on top of skyrocketing power, water and gas bills.

While some state governments around Australia have not made the decision to increase

rents for pensioners, the Barnett Government will instead hit the people who are hurting the most.
